The Kaohsiung Lantern Festival, the only harbor fireworks display in Taiwan, illuminates the night sky

Entering its 13th edition in 2013, the Kaohsiung Lantern Festival, themed "Love & Happiness," will be held from February 16 to February 24 along both banks of the Love River, from Glory Pier to the Railway Bridge and Qixian Bridge. This year’s festival centers on environmental protection and technology, featuring international lantern displays and Taiwan’s only harbor fireworks show, offering the public a rich visual and auditory experience. Additionally, on the opening night of February 16, artists and groups such as Yoga Lin, Yen-j, Chen Meifeng, and Universe will perform, while the closing night on February 24 will feature stunning performances by Huang Xiaobo and Show Lo.

Already a must-visit during the Southern Taiwan holidays, this year’s Kaohsiung Lantern Festival combines international lantern displays and the Railway Bridge’s “Dios Mio Amazing Light & Sound Theater,” among other features. It will also present Taiwan’s only “Harbor High-Altitude Fireworks” at Glory Pier, surrounded by over twenty sets of ring-shaped fireworks, complemented by aerial fireworks themed around Kaohsiung’s local agricultural products for a spectacular display. Moreover, this year also features a special collaboration with Qishan, Gangshan, and Fo Guang Shan to launch the “Three Mountains Lantern Festival.” Qishan and Fo Guang Shan lead the way, with their lantern festivals taking place on February 10 (Lunar New Year’s Day) at Qishan Stadium and Fo Guang Shan respectively, while the Gangshan Lantern Festival will light up Gangshan Riverbank Park on February 13 (the fourth day of Lunar New Year).

 

The Fo Guang Shan Peace Lantern Festival runs from February 10 to March 11, with various lanterns symbolizing happiness and joy along the 200-meter Fo Guang Boulevard. Events include a costume parade and lantern-carrying gatherings. The first 3,000 visitors taking the “Taiwan Good to Go—Dashu Blessing Line” bus can also receive a good luck blessing card upon presenting their bus ticket stub.

Additionally, this year’s “Versatile Lucky Little Dragon” mini lantern, with its glasses design symbolizing wisdom and learning, also represents an important totem of the Rukai and Paiwan indigenous tribes, and incorporates a kaleidoscopic projection effect. A total of 50,000 mini lanterns will be given out simultaneously at 4:00 PM on February 16 at Gangshan Riverbank Park, Qishan Public Stadium, Glory Pier along the Love River, as well as service desks at Wufu West Riverside and Zhongzheng East Riverside.
