Major Traditional Opera Troupes from Both Sides of the Strait to Compete at Miaoli Traditional Opera Arts Festival

The Traditional Opera Arts Festival, annually organized by Miaoli County Government and featuring performances by well-known traditional drama troupes, has garnered great praise from local residents. This year’s “Conveying Emotions in the Mountain City, Art Encounters Happiness—2013 Traditional Opera Arts Festival,” running from now until April 28, will feature 10 high-quality traditional opera troupes from both sides of the Taiwan Strait, presenting 20 spectacular opera performances across 18 townships and cities.

The 10 groups invited for this event include Mainland China’s Yongding Hakka Tulou Art Troupe, Ming Hua Yuan Drama Troupe, Rong Xing Hakka Tea-picking Opera Troupe, Wen He Legend Drama Troupe, Ming Zhu Women’s Opera Troupe, Yi Xin Drama Troupe, Hua Yi Drama Troupe, Jin Man Yuan Drama Troupe, Qing Mei Yuan Drama Troupe, and Chen Family Eight-Tone Music Troupe. They showcase a diverse range of performance styles, including Hakka Eight-Tone Music, Hakka Tea-picking Opera, and Gezaixi opera, all set to make grand appearances at the festival. The shows kicking off this weekend include the Chen Family Hakka Eight-Tone Troupe’s performance of “Melodious Hakka Sounds—A Miniature Eight-Tone Opera” at 15:00 on March 1 at the Qing’an Parking Lot in Tai’an Township, and Hua Yi Drama Troupe’s “Gradually the Mortal World” at 19:30 on March 3 at the River-Covered Plaza in Sanyi Township.

Miaoli County Government stated that due to rapid technological advancement and the emergence of media platforms, the entertainment preferences of the general public have also evolved. Traditional opera, once a symbol of grassroots culture, has moved from temple entrances in daily life to artistic performance halls. The “2013 Traditional Opera Arts Festival” aims to help traditional opera take root in every township and city within the county. By inviting Mainland China’s Yongding Hakka Tulou Art Troupe to perform and engage in cultural exchange, the county hopes to breathe new life into traditional opera.
