65K Mountain Challenge: Sun Moon Lake Cycling Event Calls for Brave Riders

The Sun Moon Lake National Scenic Area Administration and Merida Bikes have jointly organized the Sun Moon Lake cycling event, which is now in its ninth year. This year’s event will take place on April 28 and features routes designed for different types of cycling enthusiasts. The options include a 65-kilometer challenging route and a 10-kilometer scenic bike path leisure ride. Registration is open now until March 25, with a limit of 4,000 participants.

To satisfy the adventurous spirit of cycling thrill-seekers, the brave route features an altitude difference of up to 900 meters and, for the first time, extends into Xinyi Township. Along the Zhuoshui River, riders will pass through the Minhe Tunnel, taking in the majestic views of the Zhuoshui River Valley and feeling the energy of the land that nourishes life in Taiwan. Next, they’ll go through Dili and imagine the historical spirit of the tribe under the statue of the spirit at Damalan (Dili’s former name), and admire the uniquely tribal-style Catholic church. Turning into the Tanan Forest Road, participants will visit Tanan Elementary School, built with traditional Bunun-style family homes, to explore the tranquility hidden within the rugged mountains and feel the unspoiled cheers of nature. Then comes the challenge of climbing over 400 meters in elevation over a continuous 10-kilometer uphill ride. For those looking for a more relaxed experience, the 10-kilometer Sun Moon Lake Bike Path Leisure Ride allows cyclists to enjoy the beautiful surrounding mountains and waters while experiencing the novelty of cycling on the water.

 

In conjunction with Sun Moon Lake’s Starlight and Firefly Season, the first 100 cyclists who register for the event and sign up with at least one other person can join a private nighttime guided walk and firefly viewing activity by American outdoor brand MERRELL on the evening of April 27 for free. The ecologically focused night tour will be led by professional guides, and participants will also receive a special souvenir.

 

Besides Sun Moon Lake, firefly-viewing activities or accommodation packages guided by professionals will also be offered in Puli Town’s Taomi Community, Yuchi Township’s Lotus Pond, TouShe, the Sun Moon Lake Special Study Center, and by Sun Moon Lake hotels from April 1 to May 30.
