In the learning and experience room of the Sanxia Museum, managed by the New Taipei City Government’s Department of Cultural Affairs, many children have been deeply engrossed in painting. Some of their works feature diamond-patterned hundred-pace vipers, while others are totemic creations combining the hundred-pace viper with clay pots. Apart from the common theme of “snakes,” these young artists can also tell the stories behind their drawings. From now until April 30, the Sanxia Museum is launching a learning experience course — “What’s the ‘Snake’ Deal?” — a DIY serpentine print workshop. All elementary school students are welcome to register for free.

Among Taiwan’s indigenous peoples, the Paiwan and Rukai tribes have many legends related to the hundred-pace viper and even revere the snake. In the “What’s the ‘Snake’ Deal?” — Serpentine Print DIY learning experience course, children first learn about the origins of the Paiwan and Rukai tribes’ reverence for the hundred-pace viper through stories such as that of Princess Bawan and the legend of the clay pot, gaining different cultural perspectives on things. By appreciating the rich and diverse snake-patterned carvings on family houses, daily utensils, and clothing from both tribes, the children design their own snake-pattern motifs and then use printmaking materials to create small, personalized bookmarks of great commemorative value.
A wide variety of ingeniously designed hundred-pace viper patterns — some realistic, some abstract — are brought to life by the children’s hands. For activity details, please visit the official website: www.sshm.ntpc.gov.tw.
