Image Narratives in the Glow: A Solo Exhibition by Hsieh Chun-teh at Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts

In the subtle moment of pressing the shutter, the photographer captures the light, freezing it onto film, cleansing the noise of the mundane world and leaving behind only a dusky tapestry of an ancient and ambiguous, otherworldly frontier. “Glimmer Walk” draws from the renowned, subtly styled imagery of Taiwanese photography master Hsieh Chun-teh, delving into his creative journey and guiding viewers into one of the most unique chapters of modern Taiwanese photography. The Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts presents the exhibition “Glimmer Walk / Hsieh Chun-teh” from March 9 to May 26.

Born in 1949 into a farming family in Taichung, Hsieh Chun-teh left school after just one semester in the Textile Department at Shalu Senior Industrial Vocational School in Taichung County. Driven by a passion and longing for modern art, the 18-year-old boldly left his hometown alone and ventured north to the vibrant metropolis of Taipei, embarking on a life journey of viewing the world through the viewfinder. Immersed in the fervent era of modernism in the 1960s and 70s, upon arriving in the north, Hsieh combined the documentary and critical spirit of photography with experimental techniques that defied reality, expressing his trembling, restless, and intense emotions. Enhanced by techniques such as backlighting, defocus, or unconventional and peculiar compositions, he conveyed a sense of nihilism, absurdity, and uncertainty—a modern consciousness whose influence continues to this day.

 

In the spring of 2013, Hsieh Chun-teh chose the Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts to host his first and most comprehensive retrospective solo exhibition. Through the planning of this exhibition, the museum aimed to provide a holistic review of Hsieh Chun-teh’s extraordinary creative career spanning over 50 years, showcasing the fantastical world emanating with a faint glow within his images. To fully present this bold and distinctive artistic journey of Hsieh Chun-teh, the exhibition traces back to his first foray into the photography world in the early 1960s with “First Solo Exhibition,” moves through “Homeland” centered around his portrayal of our land and people, “Faces of Our Time” documenting portraits of iconic figures of the era, “Drifting Without Borders” exploring the sentiments of wanderers abroad, and then delves into the realms of love, desire, and death depicted in “Nocturne,” before finally presenting the newly released series “The Last Supper.”
