Nearly 100 teams compete in drone design contest in Pingtung, showcasing creativity

Dubbed an annual highlight in Taiwan’s aerospace community, the “Taiwan Creative Drone Design Competition” will take place on March 16 and 17 from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM under the Gaoshu Bridge in Pingtung. On the opening day, March 16, Asctec, the world’s leading manufacturer of remote-controlled helicopters in terms of global market share, will perform 3D dynamic flying demonstrations, showcase jet engines, and display model aircraft.

Now in its sixth year, the Taiwan Creative Drone Design Competition has attracted 93 teams for an exchange of ideas. The competition is divided into several categories: Beginner Electric Flight Performance Group, Beginner Electric Flapping Wing Group, Beginner Payload Design Group, Advanced Design Group, Beyond Visual Line of Sight Group, and Creative Aircraft Group. The focus is mainly on the flight performance of drones, such as aerodynamics, payload capacity, fuel efficiency, navigation, and photo capabilities. It has drawn teams from major domestic universities and colleges to compete, along with participants from Nanyang Technological University in Singapore, Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Beihang University in Beijing, and Bandung Institute of Technology in Indonesia, who have traveled across borders to join the challenge and exchange.

 

Lai Wei-hsiang, a professor in the Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics at National Cheng Kung University, said that drones may be small but are fully functional, making them not only suitable subjects for system integration education for university aerospace students, but also an important field for the future development of aerospace technology. Whether for combat, target drones, reconnaissance, surveillance, disaster detection, maritime patrol, or anti-smuggling operations, they can deliver various industrial values in military, government, and commercial sectors. Advanced countries around the world are all investing heavily in research and development. While Taiwan has aircraft model manufacturers, most remain focused on traditional aircraft forms, with functions limited to recreational toys. Therefore, he hopes this event will encourage all sectors to research and design newer, higher-value-added drones, which will also contribute to the development of Taiwan’s aerospace industry, aerial recreation activities, and leisure tourism.
