Tainan May Music Festival Kicks Off at Hutoupi Reservoir

The "Tainan May Jam," established by German-Tainan son-in-law Axel (Sun Heping) along with his circle of foreign friends, has enjoyed widespread acclaim since its inception in 2000. This year, through coordination with the Tainan City Tourism Bureau, the event is being held for the first time at the Hutoupi Reservoir Scenic Area. Typically taking place on the first weekend of May, the Tainan May Jam is a major independent music event in the Tainan region. This year, it is specially scheduled for May 4th to 5th at Hutoupi, themed "LOVE OF MUSIC," aiming to spread messages of love and peace through music.

The founder of the Tainan May Jam—German national Axel (Sun Heping)—traveled alone to India 20 years ago for spiritual practice, where he met a Taiwanese woman. Love brought them together, and they eventually settled in Tainan. Axel, who was already engaged in music and art creation, found inspiration and themes for his work in the ancient capital of Tainan, and co-founded a local band with residents—Charlie Swiggs (酒狂查理). Noticing the lack of performance venues for independent bands in Tainan, in 2000 he and Frenchman Cedric launched the first Tainan May Jam (Tainan May Jam), providing a stage for independent bands and giving music lovers the chance to get involved.

 

This year’s Tainan May Jam will feature over 35 independent bands of various styles, including local Tainan residents as well as foreigners from the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and more. With a diverse range of musical genres, the performances promise to spark unique musical moments. Additionally, activities such as yoga and instrument workshops will allow attendees to fully engage with different cultures.

 

The event will kick off with warm-up performances on the evening of May 3rd, which the public can attend free of charge. Performances on May 4th and 5th are priced at NT$300 for a one-day pass or NT$550 for a two-day pass (both include entrance to Hutoupi Reservoir). To encourage family participation, children under 16 can attend for free upon presenting their ID (though the Hutoupi entrance fee still applies).
