The months of April to June mark the peak season for blackfin tuna in Pingtung, and this year’s 13th annual Blackfin Tuna Festival ushers in the local summer tourism boom. Running from today until June 30, this year’s festival takes “Summer Sakura Romance” as its theme, featuring the adorable “Sakura Girl” as its mascot, who romantically meets the blackfin tuna “Kiko” in the waters off Donggang, weaving a summer love story. On May 11, in conjunction with Mother’s Day, a parent-child event titled “Painting Sakura Shrimp & Treating Kids to Sashimi” will be held for kindergarten and daycare children in Donggang and Pingtung. On May 18, the Campus Gourmet King Creative Competition and Celebrity Chef Performance, hosted by “Traveler’s” Sasa and featuring celebrity chefs Jeffery Jiang and Allen Chen, will showcase live cooking demonstrations. On May 25, the “Donggang Fish So Fresh – Live Auction” event allows the public to bid on their favorite seafood dishes.

To boost spending, during the Blackfin Tuna Festival from now until June 30, the public can exchange a cute wind chime for every NT$2,000 spent cumulatively across the three townships of Donggang, Liuqiu, and Linbian, limited to 5,000 wind chimes while stocks last. Those who collect stamps of the Sakura Shrimp Baby from any three participating hygienic stores on the “I Love Sakura Baby Activity Card” can enter a lucky draw, with the grand prize being a table of Donggang’s famous Sakura Tuna Banquet.

Additionally, on May 18 and 19, the Dapeng Bay Marina Park will host an International Sailing Invitational, featuring the spectacular sight of tall ships passing under the cross-sea bridge. From now until May 19, every Saturday and Sunday, the public can bring five invoices issued between March and June 2013 for a free experience of kayaking, sailing, or wakeboarding. On June 11, the Pingtung County Dragon Boat Race will kick off along the Donggang River. Official website: www.2013toro.com.tw.

Travelers planning to attend the Pingtung Blackfin Tuna Festival also have the chance to participate in fun games for cash prizes. Starting now until August 30, Pingtung County Government has launched the “Fantastic Journey to Find Richard Parker” campaign, featuring seven differently designed tiger mascots placed at seven locations: Baisha Bay in Kenting, Hengchun Transfer Station, Folklore Museum, Hengchun Junior High School Floating City Wall, Qianggu Shed, Nanwan, and the Kenting Police Station Bicycle Station. The public just needs to find the tigers, take photos with them, then use a free smartphone collage app to combine five or seven photos into one and upload it to the campaign website (http://fv38.com/75982) to receive a serial number. In addition to getting a beautiful souvenir, participants can also enter a lucky draw.

The lucky draw is held in two phases. The first phase, “Catch 5 Tigers for 5-Star Accommodation,” ends on June 30. Anyone who uploads five successful tiger photos can win prizes such as 5-star hotel vouchers, specialty homestay vouchers, and second-generation Pingtung premium souvenirs like pineapple cakes. The second phase, “Catch All 7 Tigers for NT$70,000 in Cash,” runs from now until August 30. Those who successfully upload all seven tiger photos can enter to win cash prizes — two prizes of NT$20,000 and three of NT$10,000.
