Following the success of the “MGM Butterfly Ballet” in 2012, which attracted over 300,000 visitors, MGM MACAU has launched the “Magical Light Journey” starting from May this year. Designed with the ocean as its theme, the main installation is a cylindrical “Water Sky Screen” surrounded by coral, located in the center of the Sky Screen Plaza. Over a thousand fish swim within it, blending the ocean and sky into one. It presents MGM’s unique “Light. Shadow. Water World” entertainment experience in a full-scale, all-weather format, and entry is free to promote the environmental message of marine conservation.

The “Light. Shadow. Water World” is a collaboration between MGM’s professional team and renowned American installation designer Stephen Stefanou. From conception, design, preparation to production, it took one year. Its main components include a crimson coral palace, the cylindrical “Water Sky Screen,” as well as installations such as large seaweed, bubble ornaments, and schools of fish. Leveraging the uniqueness of the Sky Screen Plaza, it reinterprets the wonders of nature through light and shadow, presenting a fantastical underwater world scene by scene.
In the center of the Sky Screen Plaza stands a grand and magnificent crimson coral palace, embracing the 5-meter-diameter, 8.3-meter-high cylindrical “Water Sky Screen.” Its design allows a 360-degree view of the graceful movements of the fish. The “Water Sky Screen,” weighing over 200 tons, was manufactured in Japan. It was first vertically cut into five sections at the production site before being transported to Macao. Later, a base and multiple layers of steel frames were erected in the Sky Screen Plaza, and it was seamlessly reassembled using exquisite joining techniques. The scale of transportation and installation is truly rare, making this project truly one of a kind.
Multiple sets of large seaweed, bubble ornaments, and fish group installations from the United States are placed around the coral palace, creating a marvelous feeling of being in an ocean world. The large seaweed is entirely produced using computer graphics and 3D printing technology, with vivid shapes. The specially made fiberglass material offers UV protection and is resistant to fading. Hanging in mid-air across the plaza are strings of ornaments mimicking the shape of underwater bubbles. Their design utilizes the optical principle of Fresnel lenses, with excellent light-gathering ability that refracts soft rays of light, creating a harmonious scene of sunlight penetrating the ocean. Coupled with aluminum fish group installations swimming through the air, they shimmer silver in the sunlight, looking incredibly lifelike.
The fish displayed inside the “Water Sky Screen” include three small blacktip reef sharks from Australia’s Great Barrier Reef, as well as over a thousand red emperor snappers, golden trevallies, and roundface batfish from the South China Sea area. Visitors can enjoy various species of fish freely swimming in the same place at the same time—an exceptional opportunity. During the day, sunlight shining through the screen creates a vibrant scene, while in the evening, under the accent of lighting design, it presents another captivating beauty resembling an ocean aurora.
