Lunch Beat: You dance, I buy you lunch

Lunch Beat was first founded by Molly Ränge in a garage in Stockholm, the capital of Norway. After three years of development, it has expanded to over 55 cities across five continents. The biggest feature of the event is that it’s truly “active”: First, there’s no fixed venue for the dance party. Lunch Beat is actually a community where local organizers scout locations, while the headquarters and branches provide support including DJs. As a result, venues can range from regular dance halls to garages, schools, or even mall corridors. Secondly, Lunch Beat always takes place during the lunch break hour, so the rules are simple: dance to your heart’s content, alongside office workers, tourists, and strangers around you. Dance to the rhythm without any inhibitions. Of course, there’s no need to diet for two weeks just to fit into your leotard—plus, they serve you lunch, so forget about the leotard altogether.

 

After an hour of dancing and sweating, office workers have to return to their suit-and-tie world. But if you’re a traveler, it’s a rare chance to see Wall Street types or judges ditching formality and letting loose. Just imagining the scene tells you how much of a contrast it is. But beware: the event gently discourages work talk during the lunch break—don’t spoil the fun for everyone.
