The baby panda "Yuanza" looks up at its mother with an adorable expression that melts your heart

The baby panda "Yuanzai," who has recently captured the hearts of all Taiwan—the first panda cub born in Taiwan—finally opened her eyes after 42 days of waiting to see her mother, "Yuan Yuan." In recent days, the tender interactions between mother and cub have won the affection of many Taiwanese. It typically takes about 45 days for a panda cub to open its eyes from birth, and Yuanzai, under the careful care of conservationists, has been developing smoothly.

The reason why Yuan Yuan and Yuanzai have garnered so much attention is not only due to their cute appearance, but also because newborn panda cubs are incredibly hard to come by. Pandas are solitary animals, and male pandas are not particularly interested in mating—their breeding season lasts just a few short days each year, so successful pregnancy depends on perfect timing, location, and conditions. Even after a panda cub is born, the newborn is extremely small and fragile. Weighing only one-thousandth of the mother’s weight, Yuanzai weighed about 183.4 grams at birth, while her mother Yuan Yuan weighs 111 kilograms—there’s always a risk that the mother might accidentally crush her cub. Unlike human babies, newborn panda cubs are not fully developed at birth; their bright red bodies are smaller than a palm, requiring very careful nurturing. As they grow, their eye patches, ears, and shoulder areas gradually turn black, and their eyes slowly open. Understanding how difficult it is for these little pandas to grow healthy makes every giant panda’s existence all the more precious.
