Norway’s “Thief Hotel” to Recapture Your Stolen Scandinavian Moments

Did Norway just launch a “Thief Hotel”? It turns out to be The Thief, which opened in Oslo this January, nestled right on the Tjuvholmen Peninsula. In the 18th century, many prisoners and thieves were sent to this small island, hence its nickname as “Thief Island,” which inspired the hotel’s name. But in today’s 21st century, this place has transformed into one of the most culturally and artistically vibrant spots in Scandinavia.

The Thief looks like a giant ship moored in the harbor. The building was designed by Oslo architect Mellbye Architekter, and its interior is filled with designer furniture and collections, almost like a small museum. The designer furnishings in the rooms come from both Norwegian and international designers. Also, thanks to The Thief’s long-term collaboration with Norway’s design and architecture center DogA, works by many emerging Norwegian designers are also displayed in the hotel.

The hotel has a total of 119 rooms, among which The Oslo Suite spans an impressive 160 square meters. Its private rooftop terrace offers unobstructed views of the fjords, and the room also features a warm fireplace, a private bar, and a dining area, making it the most luxurious offering in the hotel. Each room comes with a king-size bed, floor-to-ceiling windows, a private balcony, as well as an armchair designed by renowned Italian designer Antonic Citterio. Even the slippers, wool blankets, and bathrobes are all custom-designed pieces.

Next to the hotel is the newly opened Astrup Fearnley Museum, which has quickly become a focal point of attention. The surrounding streets are lined with high-end restaurants, bistros, and art galleries, making it a perfect cultural spot for a leisurely stroll. Moreover, since the hotel is located right by the fjord, during summer you can take a shuttle boat directly from the city center to reach the hotel—an amazing mode of transport that only The Thief could come up with. Additionally, the hotel plans to add the THIEF Spa in January 2014, so you can enjoy a variety of spa treatments without even leaving your room. Even if you’re “a prisoner on Thief Island” for a day, you won’t mind.
