Spend a day as a local Berliner and make friends with the residents

The easiest way to get to know a city is to make friends with the locals. Located in Berlin’s Neukölln District, which has the highest immigrant population, Plus One Berlin was born in March last year from this very concept by the Spamroom design studio.

Simply called P1B, Plus One Berlin has only one room, with an area of just 9 pyeong (about 30 square meters)—like a rental apartment—but it fully showcases the Germanic spirit of simplicity, practicality, and warmth. The interior furnishings, from the bed, wardrobe, mini kitchen to the desk, resemble building blocks. Rectangular pieces of various sizes create excellent storage functionality—for example, three movable cabinets under the bed can be pulled out to serve as ready-made seats, while all the movable cabinets pushed together form a simple extra bed for a third person. The main cabinet in the corner can function as a wardrobe or storage unit, or even as a place to store condiments for self-catering. Every item you see here was handpicked from a large pool of second-hand discarded furniture by the Spamroom studio and then assembled. Different types of wood, grain textures, and faint remnants of paint colors create a distinctive design aesthetic. Spamroom explains that although this takes more time than using new furniture, it results in a completely unique and one-of-a-kind personality. As a result, items such as gas pipe lamps or vintage-style hangers are all handmade.
