"Yuanyuan" is excelling at nursing, and the energetic "Yuannian" has doubled her weight in return

In addition to demonstrating the results of "Yuanyuan"'s nursing through her weight, "Yuannian" also provides nourishment back to her mother through her feces. Some undigested nutrients in "Yuannian"'s stool are consumed by "Yuanyuan" when stimulating her bowel movements.

 

Giant pandas are among the animals where fertilized eggs experience delayed implantation. Newborn cubs are very underdeveloped, with their eyes closed, bodies pink, and covered in sparse white fetal fur. At half a month old, they are nursed about 6 times a day. The frequency of nursing decreases as the cub grows. By 3–4 months old, the cub becomes more active but still relies solely on mother’s milk, with nursing reduced to 1–2 times per day and weight reaching 6–7 kilograms. After birth, the cub’s digestive system is still developing, with a small stomach capacity. As the body rapidly grows, digestion and absorption abilities gradually strengthen.

 

"Yuannian" is currently developing well and is gradually progressing from crawling to taking a few steps on her own. Her front limbs are now quite strong, but her hind legs still need improvement. Therefore, even though she can now try to push herself up and move, her steps are still unsteady—sometimes she takes a few steps before falling or sitting down to rest.

Nowadays, "Yuannian" is becoming more and more lively and active. As her mobility improves, she has started to wiggle around everywhere. When zookeepers clean the room she shares with her mother "Yuanyuan," the little "Yuannian," who is usually placed in the delivery room to practice walking, listens carefully to the rustling sounds of bamboo branches being collected or the broom sweeping the floor. Once she locates the sound, she moves toward it. Like a little follower, "Yuannian" wiggles her body toward any moving object within her sight—be it the zookeeper, the broom, bamboo leaves, or a bucket. If she is put back in the delivery room and asked to stay put, she will grumble unhappily.
