Globetrotting Anthony Bourdain secretly visited Taiwan last year to film a new season of TLC's "Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown." A Facebook photo of him feasting on clams in Keelung caused a stir among fans. The new 10-episode series, premiering November 2, will reveal how Bourdain explores 10 global cities including Taipei, Paris, and Toronto. Speaking honestly about Taipei, Bourdain said: "Taipei isn't beautiful, but it hides beauty. It's a city with depth, and I'd be happy to visit again anytime!"

Bourdain stayed true to his candid style, sharing his unfiltered views on Taipei in the new season of "Parts Unknown." During his 48-hour layover in Taipei, he took a train to Keelung to try clams, and raved about the smooth, velvety texture of fresh sea urchin, calling it a must-have date dish: "Order sea urchins for dinner, and if she loves them, you’re in for a great night." Also a must-try in Taipei: classic xiaolongbao. Bourdain marveled at how their intricate preparation could be replicated across branches without losing taste, calling it nothing short of science. And never one to hide his love for pork, when visiting the National Palace Museum and seeing the intricately carved Meat-Shaped Stone, he enthusiastically declared: "This is the best tribute to pork — that’s my dream pork!" He even brought a souvenir replica home for his wife.
Apart from Keelung clams, xiaolongbao, and the National Palace Museum, night markets are also a Taipei highlight. Bourdain loved them so much, he skipped his five-star hotel, saying: "I think we should’ve stayed in a nearby hotel and eaten there for three days to do this night market justice!" To truly understand Taipei, don’t just follow guidebooks. Bourdain tried his first-ever shrimp fishing at Wai Shuangxi, a popular local activity. Upon hearing the shrimp are raised in sulfur hot spring water, he wrinkled his nose and asked: "So does the shrimp taste like farts?"

To start the morning in Taipei, you can’t miss Yonghe Soy Milk. Trying savory soy milk for the first time, Bourdain thought it was like milk with cereal mixed with French toast. As for Taiwan’s beloved shengjian and youtiao, Bourdain saw them as sandwiches wrapped around donuts. After breakfast, he headed to the park to practice tai chi with a master. Surprisingly, he enjoyed tai chi more than the gym. “At the gym, I have to fight not throwing up in front of others — those people in tight workout clothes running on treadmills are just gross.”
On his limited 48-hour layover, Bourdain visits 10 global cities, sampling Chicago’s best hot dogs and Italy’s hidden beef sandwiches, swimming in Dublin or sipping New Orleans’ most famous drink. In the new TLC season of "Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown," Bourdain turns travel layovers into the best part of the trip.
