HowToTrip's Literary Haven: Keihan Medaka Shoten Bookstore in Ichijoji

 

According to Horibe, the expanded 150-tsubo (approximately 500 square meters) Medaka Shoten is no longer just a bookstore. It now features three main areas: the book section, the goods section, and the exhibition space. Through the distinct functions of these spaces, knowledge, art, and culture are conveyed to the public. Horibe says, “We have professional buyers who source antiques, stationery, and publications from Japan and around the world. Then, through special planning, we systematically display these cultural items—for example, letterpress printing, Taiwanese tea ware, out-of-print classic books, and more—based on our themes.” Horibe also mentioned that Medaka Shoten doesn’t focus on any particular genre. “Some may think we lean toward art books or indie publications, but actually, what we value is ‘uniqueness’ and ‘meaning,’ which is why we can’t limit ourselves.” Picking up a copy of Be Strong (一个人远足) by Taiwanese illustrated author Wang Chunzi from the shelf, Horibe said, “After meeting Wang Chunzi, I found her work really interesting, so I thought Medaka Shoten should introduce it to Japanese readers.” Discovering Wang Chunzi’s work in Kyoto was like running into an old friend abroad—Medaka Shoten offers that rare feeling of serendipity.

 

During my six-day trip to Kyoto, I visited Medaka Shoten twice. I was not only amazed by the independent publications from Japan and abroad, but also captivated by the wide array of unique goods, handmade items, and antiques. I found myself lamenting that “time flies too fast!” and didn’t want to leave.
