The 2014 Taipei 101 fireworks show lasted 218 seconds, the second longest in history

As New Year's Eve approaches, fireworks displays across Taiwan are being planned intensively. This year’s Taipei 101 New Year’s Eve fireworks show, sponsored by direct-selling company Nu Skin, will last 218 seconds, 30 seconds longer than last year’s 188-second show. This makes it the second longest fireworks display in the history of the Taipei 101 New Year’s Eve show since it began in 2004.

This year’s Taipei 101 fireworks will once again be designed by the internationally acclaimed French team “Group F,” which received high praise last year. As this year marks the 10th anniversary of Taipei 101, the fireworks show will be themed around the number “ten.” The 218-second display is the second longest in history, following the centennial celebration of the Republic of China.

 

On December 31, 2004, the Taipei 101 office tower was officially completed. To announce to the world that the tallest building was in Taipei, fireworks were launched at the first second of 2005 to celebrate the New Year. Since then, the annual fireworks show has attracted hundreds of thousands of spectators. During the centennial celebration, the show was even linked with the Dajia Riverside Park, with a total of 30,000 fireworks launched over 288 seconds, setting a record. In 2012, the New Year’s Eve fireworks combined the two “101s” — the year 2011 (民国101年) and the Taipei 101 building — resulting in a 202-second show with 30,000 fireworks, launching over 148 fireworks per second, making it the most densely packed fireworks show in Taipei 101’s history.
