Queensland Beach Opera "The Magic Flute" Grand Performance on the Gold Coast in 2014

An opera performance of "The Magic Flute" by the Australian Opera will be grandly staged from May 9 to 11, 2014, at Greenmount Beach in Coolangatta, a popular surfing spot on the Gold Coast. Queensland’s Minister for Tourism, Jann Stuckey, stated that beach opera is an exciting highlight on Queensland’s arts and cultural calendar, offering visitors a unique experience on the Gold Coast. This new format event will be the only large-scale opera performed on a beach stage, drawing global attention to the Gold Coast.

Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate expressed his delight that the beach opera will be held in the city. Mayor Tate said, “As Mayor of the Gold Coast, I am thrilled that the beach opera is coming here. The beach opera is an exciting opportunity to showcase the Gold Coast’s unique scenery and beach culture through the arts. We have one of the best beaches in the world, and using this beautiful shoreline as the backdrop for a major performance will secure the Gold Coast’s place on the world’s events map. The beach opera sets a benchmark, letting the nation and the world know that this is a city unafraid to innovate. Through the beach opera, the Gold Coast will be even more confident in becoming a leader in the arts and culture space.”

 

Lyndon Terracini, Artistic Director of the Australian Opera, said he was delighted to have a new stage in Queensland. He said, “Over the past year and a half, we have been working hard to bring the beach opera to Queensland, and we’re thrilled to make it happen with the support of the Bleach* Festival. A brand-new version of ‘The Magic Flute’ has been specially created for this production, featuring top-tier performers from the Australian Opera and talented local singers. It’s a show suitable for audiences of all ages.”

 

This is a joyous celebration tailor-made for Queensland and specially designed for modern audiences, combining magnificent live orchestral performances, stunning lighting and sound effects, luxurious costumes, and dramatic surprises. The Beach Opera is a collaborative effort between the Australian Opera, the Bleach* Festival, and the Queensland Government, presented jointly by Tourism and Events Queensland and the City of the Gold Coast.
