Tainan’s Beimen White Christmas: Taiwan’s Most “Salty” Santa Claus

With just one month to go until Christmas, festive celebrations across Taiwan are being unveiled one after another. Organized by the Yunlin, Chiayi, and Tainan Coastal National Scenic Area Administration, the “White Christmas” event is showcasing creativity and ingenuity. It is currently creating Taiwan’s one-of-a-kind “salty” Christmas wonderland in Tainan’s Beimen Old Street. One of the highlights is the most “salty” Santa Claus, who will act as a postman this year to deliver “letters” of blessings. With his adorable and lovable appearance, he has instantly become a focal point, attracting many passersby to stop, gather around, and take photos.

Director Zheng Rong of the Yunlin, Chiayi, and Tainan Administration said that for many years, the festival has always revolved around themes related to the sea. This year, they specially invited Dr. Wang Jinhe, who has dedicated his life to treating patients with blackfoot disease, to be the spokesperson for the event, making him the oldest Santa Claus in Taiwan. To honor Dr. Wang Jinhe’s kindness, the management has designed a cute cartoon version of the doctor, which is printed on postcards given to visitors in Beimen. They hope to share the doctor’s love and care with the public.

This rooftop Santa Claus, paired with a chimney design, stands about 3 meters tall and 2–3 meters wide. It was meticulously sculpted by the Wanfo Village Workshop and renowned artist Teacher Zhuang Bishang, using Styrofoam with some parts sprayed with coarse salt produced in Jingzijiao. It is located on the roof of the Beimenyu Restaurant. A hemp rope connects its hand to a mailbox set up below, allowing future visitors to drop in their written postcards. Its orientation complements the “Money Comes Also Grocery Store,” and due to its high visibility and eye-catching design, it is very attention-grabbing.

The administration stated that the “Blessing” postcards designed for this event will be available for collection starting from December 6, the day the Christmas tree lighting ceremony takes place, at the Beimen Visitor Center. Limited to 1,000 copies, visitors can write messages of gratitude to loved ones, friends, or partners, fill in the address and recipient information, and drop the cards into the dedicated Christmas mailbox next to the “Beimen Christmas Square.” The cards will then be delivered free of charge to spread love. The event will run until December 25. Additionally, the 2013 White Christmas & Sunset Sending events will include a Christmas KUSO Costume Contest and a White Christmas Street Party in Beimen on December 22. On December 31 at 16:30, the “Sunset Sending” event will be held at the “Jingzijiao Salt Fields.” Related information and the registration form for the Christmas KUSO Costume Contest can be downloaded and viewed on the official website of the Yunlin, Chiayi, and Tainan Administration.
