Times Square is a triangular wedge-shaped plot of land carved out by Broadway and 7th Avenue. It got its name when The New York Times moved into the area in 1905. One of the main reasons Times Square gained international fame is its iconic New Year’s Eve countdown. This tradition originated in 1904, when The New York Times chose to move into its new building on New Year’s Eve and celebrated by setting off fireworks at midnight. Since then, it has become an annual tradition. Every December 31st, a 200-pound illuminated ball is hoisted atop One Times Square Plaza. At the stroke of midnight, the ball descends and scatters countless colorful ribbons in celebration.

Sydney Harbour, Australia

Sydney is the first city in the world to count down into the new year. This 135-meter-tall Ferris wheel, standing on the south bank of the Thames opposite the British Parliament, is twice the height of Big Ben. It is the fourth tallest structure in London, after Canary Wharf Building, Natwest Bank, and Telecom Tower, and is currently London’s most dazzling new landmark. Ever since the London Eye was built, New Year’s Eve fireworks have been set off here. Starting in 2005, fireworks have even been launched directly from the wheel itself. On New Year’s Eve, the skyline along Victoria Harbour is adorned with Christmas and New Year lights, complemented by the laser light and music show “Symphony of Lights.” It is arguably the most festive city in Asia for New Year’s celebrations. At midnight on the 31st, a grand fireworks display will be launched, attracting large crowds of spectators.

Besides Victoria Harbour, Times Square in Causeway Bay also holds a countdown event inspired by New York’s Times Square, known as the “Apple Countdown.” The moment the 15th apple lights up, brilliant fireworks burst forth layer by layer, while colorful balloons fill the night sky—a truly romantic scene.
