【Thursday Art Appreciation】Impressions. Classics—The Monet Exhibition Explores the Master’s Play of Light and Water

The bright and cheerful style of Impressionist paintings, along with their focus on everyday landscapes and figures, has been widely loved by the public. Monet, a representative master of the Impressionist movement, thanks to the generous loan from the Musée Marmottan Monet in Paris—the world’s most significant collection of Monet’s works, the National Museum of History and the United Daily News Group have jointly organized the “Impressions. Classics—Monet” special exhibition from now until February 16, 2014, bringing yesterday’s impressions back as today’s classics.

Monet devoted his life to exploring light and shadow, capturing the vivid and colorful play of water and sky in nature, and grasping the rich vitality of fleeting moments. This exhibition specially selects 55 representative works by Monet and arranges them into five thematic sections: Friends and Portraits, Satirical Cartoons, Poems of Light and Shadow, Monet’s Garden, and the Eternal Monet, allowing visitors to gain a comprehensive understanding of the life and art that shaped Monet. The story begins with Monet’s personal collection, featuring portraits that reveal his taste in collecting and narrating the friendships and family he cherished throughout his life. It then moves on to the satirical cartoons where Monet first demonstrated his painting talent and began to rise to prominence, followed by the travels that helped shape the master of Impressionism, the beloved scenery of his Giverny garden, and finally his later works that embraced an extremely free expression highly admired by the abstract expressionists of the art world.

 

　　 Artists convey their feelings and ideas to the audience through their creations, sometimes resonating widely and gaining widespread acclaim and fame; other times, they may struggle to receive any praise, fighting to uphold their artistic ideals amid worldly ridicule while making ends meet. The everyday subject matter and bold, innovative visual effects of Impressionism once shocked and were difficult for the public to accept, but as times changed and trends evolved, they stood out and achieved everlasting fame.

 

    Today, water lilies are the most direct association people have with Monet. He had a deep love for gardens; for him, a garden was itself a creation, a microcosm of the universe, rather than merely a source of subject matter. The construction of the garden and Monet’s artistic creation maintained a complex relationship, akin to what Proust described as the first and most vivid draft; it could also be considered a ready-made, wonderful palette filled with harmonious tones. This exhibition specially integrates resources from various institutions in the Nanhua Academic Park. In coordination with this exhibition, this museum and the Taipei Botanical Garden will plan landscape arrangements and guided tour activities, allowing the exhibition and the real environment to complement each other, so that while appreciating the beauty of art, everyone can also feel the beauty of life.
