Nostalgic Setting: Yanping Theater Reimagined as Tainan's True, Good, and Beautiful Theater Opens

Located in the West Central District of Tainan City, the China Film Tainan True, Good, and Beautiful Theater officially opened on February 9, bringing a rich old-capital charm to the newly reopened venue.

From the overlapping mosaic of Miyakoza, Yanping Theater, and the True, Good, and Beautiful Theater—from the tatami mats of the Japanese colonial era where people "endured hardship sitting down" to the movie theater where audiences were asked to "stand up" for the national anthem—the evolution from cinematic realism to the atmosphere of contemporary film reflects the heritage and inspiration in the historical relationship between China Film and Taiwanese cinema.

The Tainan True, Good, and Beautiful Theater specially hired the maverick architect Chu Shih-kang, deliberately using a restoration approach to provoke thought among those experiencing the space. The extension and transformation of time and space reshape impressions of the theater, hence preserving old bricks, wood, old doors and windows, furniture, vintage images... and other memory-laden materials from Yanping Theater.

The theater also displays and preserves the film projection equipment once used at Yanping Theater, recreates the ambiance of early alleyway-style settings, and revives the classic scene from the film "In Our Time" where the male and female protagonists chat on the railway tracks. These various traces of past life allow every visitor entering the theater—whether buying a ticket, before entering, after watching a film, or in every glance, turn, and pause—to have a unique experience.

Additionally, the theater invited Mr. Yen Chen-fa, who once hand-painted signage for Yanping Theater, to create a painting of Miyakoza Theater that is more vivid than 3D. With his extraordinary skills, Mr. Yen brought Miyakoza to life in striking detail. The artwork was unveiled today with Mr. Yen himself personally signing it, and he even requested to visit the theater, where memories came flooding back.
