The most eye-catching events this first weekend of 2014 include the return of the Yellow Rubber Duck, which popped on New Year’s Eve, back to Keelung, while the Teddy Bear Festival that swept through Central Taiwan will wrap up this weekend. In addition, the “Zhu Ming Ceramics Not Seen at Zhu Ming Museum” exhibition at the Yingge Ceramics Museum, the “Beauty of Contemporary Woodcarving in Miaoli” special exhibition, the “Astonishing 'New Vision'” science photography exhibition at the Taichung National Museum of Natural Science, and the “Women · Birds · Stars: Miró Special Exhibition” at the Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts are all on display starting today. Keelung City
The Yellow Rubber Duck, which burst on New Year’s Eve, has returned to Keelung Marine Square this morning after emergency repairs by the organizers. A pressure relief fan has also been installed inside the duck to prevent another burst.

The Yingge Ceramics Museum is exhibiting “Art in Clay – Taiwan Artists’ Ceramic Works” from now until April 20 in its third-floor special exhibition room. The show features 93 ceramic pieces by 24 Taiwanese artists. Among them, the 230cm-long and 115cm-wide “Humanity Series Pot117” left a deep impression on visitors. Created by Zhu Ming over five years, the piece assembles over a hundred clay figures into one work, each displaying a different expression. Zhu Ming said he transformed individual forms into a collective force, representing the concept of “all living beings.”
The “Humanity Series” displayed in this exhibition are all part of the Zhu Ming Museum’s collection and are being shown together for the first time, with 10 selected works exhibited at the ceramics museum. The most stunning aspect is how Zhu Ming crafted the clay figures simply by rolling and shaping thin clay slabs, then slightly pinching and carving them—bringing out their charm, movement, and posture instantly. Similar techniques were used for the clay fish: folding a large slab and shaping it to achieve a balance between rough texture and delicate detail, perfectly capturing the fish’s graceful swimming form and robust body.

Miaoli County
The Miaoli County Government International Culture and Tourism Bureau is holding the “2014 Beauty of Contemporary Woodcarving Special Exhibition” from now until January 26 in the First Exhibition Room. The exhibit displays award-winning works from past years and a selection of fine domestic and international pieces from the Woodcarving Museum’s collection, totaling 30 works. Each piece of wood undergoes rough carving, chiseling, engraving, and hollowing, followed by fine detailing and surface polishing. Every step embodies the woodcarvers’ dedication in breathing artistic life into the wood, vividly presenting the beauty of woodcarving. Art and cultural enthusiasts are welcome to join in.

Taichung City
The Taichung National Museum of Natural Science, in its first collaboration with the National Science Council Foundation for the Promotion of Science Education, Scientific American Magazine, and Global Science Magazine, has launched the “Astonishing 'New Vision'” science photography competition. Sixty winning entries are on display from January 4 to June 8 in the museum’s Second Special Exhibition Room. The content spans phenomena and objects in physics, astronomy, chemistry, biology, medicine, earth sciences, and environmental ecology—all creatively capturing scientific essence. Through the self-expression of image production processes and techniques, the exhibition aims to convey the diverse pathways of the scientific world, broadening the horizons and joy of knowledge exploration.

Under the guidance of the Taichung City Government and organized by the Taiwan Teddy Bear Association, the “2013 Teddy Bear Taichung Happy Carnival” features a custom-designed theme bear created by renowned Taiwanese designer Aaron Nieh. The exhibition blends art with local industry and is being held from now until January 5 at Taichung Autumn Valley, Caotun Road, City Hall Plaza, and Shin Kong Mitsukoshi exhibition spaces.

Tainan City
A 3-meter-tall, 3.5-meter-wide white rubber duck made entirely of salt stands at Jingzijiao Salt Fields in Beimen District. It took 20 days to create and will be on display until after the Lunar New Year. Visitors can plan a trip to see this locally made version of the iconic duck.
