On December 24, 2013, the temperature was unusually high, and Hong Kong experienced an unprecedented typhoon attack on Christmas Eve.
The Lung Kwu Tan Fire Station received a report that a man was trapped in a distillery on Mong Fat Street, where thick black smoke was billowing. Senior Station Officer He Wing-sum (played by Nicholas Tse) led a team along with Chief Officer Lee Pui-to (Simon Yam) to the scene for rescue. During the operation, newly assigned Marine (Hu Jun) nearly got electrocuted, but luckily Fire Captain Yau Bond-chiu (Shawn Yue) arrived just in time to save him. The distillery in question was connected to a sewage drain and underground oil tanks, with unidentified pipes laid nearby. As a precaution, Wing-sum decided to spray water to cool the area, but was obstructed by his superior, Ip Chi-fai (Andy On).
Wing-sum, Chiu, and Ip were all from the same training cohort. Years ago, during a major fire, the three entered the blaze without authorization, were suspected of disobeying orders, and underwent internal investigation — yet only Chiu took full responsibility alone. Since then, Wing-sum has suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder and has never set foot in a fire scene again; Ip, on the other hand, rose rapidly through the ranks but used regulations to suppress Wing-sum at every turn; meanwhile, unresolved tension lingered between Wing-sum and Chiu.
The unidentified pipes near the distillery turned out to be gas lines. Wing-sum decided to defy orders and led the team back to inspect the distillery, where a major reignition occurred. At the Black Point Power Station, Chief Engineer Yeung Lam (Bing Bai) discovered abnormal gas flow in the Mong Fat Street area and insisted on immediately stopping gas transmission to prevent an explosion, but was overruled by the power company’s senior management, Man Wah-biu (Patrick Tam). Wing-sum sent Marine along with Yeung Lam into the power plant in an attempt to manually shut off the gas line. Ip, realizing his misjudgment, got into a heated argument with Wing-sum and accidentally fell from a height, sustaining serious injuries. As a result, the Fire Commander announced that Wing-sum would take full charge of the Lung Kwu Tan station.
On Christmas Eve, the lights of Victoria Harbour suddenly went out — it turned out the power company had ignored warnings and reopened the gas lines, causing an explosion and resulting in a citywide blackout. Explosions rocked the power plant, firefighters evacuated the injured, urgently awaiting backup. Meanwhile, Chiu received a call from school informing him that his son had gone missing after visiting the power plant. Explosions had sealed multiple exits of the facility, the blackout triggered massive traffic jams across Hong Kong, and rescue teams for collapses were delayed. Desperate to find his son, Chiu decided to take a risky gamble. With Typhoon Signal No. 8 hoisted, rescue conditions deteriorated even further — but Wing-sum also decided to take his shot...
