Taipei surpasses Tokyo and Shanghai to rank among the world’s top 100 travel destinations

Founded in 1972, the highly influential and authoritative market research company Euromonitor International recently released its “Top 100 City Destinations Ranking,” in which Taipei ranked 18th—ahead of well-known cities such as Tokyo, Amsterdam, Shanghai, Las Vegas, and Beijing. This is a three-place improvement from last year’s 21st place.

Euromonitor International publishes the “Top 100 City Destinations” annually and analyzes the tourism status and competitiveness of cities around the world. A “tourist destination” refers to a location with specific tourism resources, including tourism activities, ground facilities, transportation, and market demand. A higher ranking indicates stronger tourism appeal and the ability to attract repeat visits.

 

Taipei boasts unique tourism resources. In terms of nature, visitors can enjoy mountain views, hot springs, and river scenery in a short time—for example, Yangmingshan, Maokong, Beitou Hot Springs, and the Blue Highway are all attractions that draw travelers back again and again. Its rich cultural heritage and warm hospitality also leave a deep impression on visitors, while innovative thinking and urban development have earned Taipei the title of “2016 World Design Capital.” Moreover, Taipei frequently garners international media attention for its food and transportation. For instance, international media outlet CNN once featured an article on Taiwanese street food, highlighting stinky tofu and pepper buns from Raohe Night Market, while the globally renowned travel magazine Global Traveler has praised the convenience of Taipei’s YouBike system.

 

Additionally, Taipei offers advantages such as “great food,” “convenience,” and “high safety,” along with a dense transportation network and easy access to free Wi-Fi, providing residents and tourists alike with a comfortable living and travel environment. Coupled with continuous tourism initiatives and events promoted by the Taipei City Government, Taipei has not only earned international accolades such as “Top 10 Global Food Destinations,” “Top 10 Most Affordable Travel Destinations,” and “13th Best Tourist Destination in Asia,” but has also become a top choice for many international travelers. In the future, the Tourism Bureau will continue to promote and market Taipei’s tourism resources globally, attracting more visitors to experience the city’s diverse charm and encourage repeat visits.
