Top 10 Emerging Asian Travel Cities of 2014: Kaohsiung and Kenting Shine

Global online accommodation providers have selected the top 10 emerging Asian travel cities for 2014, recommending newly popular Asian destinations to travelers. Following Hualien in 2012 and Nantou last year, Taiwan claimed two spots in the top five this year: Kenting at the southernmost tip of the country, and the port city of Kaohsiung. This highlights the booming development of Taiwan’s tourism industry, as more and more international visitors are discovering the beauty of Taiwan.

In Agoda.com’s ranking, the top five are Mandalay in Myanmar, Kenting in Taiwan, Okinawa in Japan, Lombok in Indonesia, and Kaohsiung in Taiwan. It describes Kenting, located at the southernmost part of Taiwan, as encompassing several distinct scenic areas along with a national park, and being famous for its lush forests and tropical beaches. Additionally, outdoor enthusiasts will instantly fall in love with Kenting. Here, you can surf, swim, hike, go mountain climbing, camp, even explore caves or soak in hot springs—the diverse outdoor activities are all worth experiencing. The nearby towns have a slow pace of life, perfect for cyclists to ride through country roads and soak up authentic Taiwanese charm. The night market on Kenting Street is also a must-visit. By the way, Kenting’s famous “Spring Scream” music festival was held from April 3 to 6 this year.

 

As for Kaohsiung, situated in southern Taiwan and nestled between mountains and the sea, it has frequently appeared on CNN Travel’s website. This coastal metropolis is one of Taiwan’s five special municipalities and an important political, economic, and commercial hub. Known for its international trade port, Kaohsiung has seen a surge in tourism in recent years, with urban beautification projects and increasing new flight routes making it easily accessible for travelers from neighboring countries. Its mild and pleasant climate keeps the city vibrant year-round, and its proximity to many beautiful towns makes it an ideal base for exploring the beauty of southern Taiwan. Kaohsiung’s transportation is very convenient—whether you take the MRT or rent a bicycle, you can leisurely explore museums, go shopping, or sample authentic Taiwanese street food at night markets.

 

In sixth to tenth place in this ranking are Kota Kinabalu in Malaysia, Osaka in Japan, Chiang Rai in Thailand, Perth in Australia, and Da Nang in Vietnam.
