Firefly Season Preview: Registration Now Open for Firefly-Watching Events in Taipei, New Taipei, and Nantou

As late spring transitions into early summer, the enchanting dance of fireflies will soon light up Taiwan’s woodlands. So far,three locations — Qian Die Valley in Taipei City, Er Ge Shan in New Taipei City, and Lu Gu in Nantou County — have opened registration for firefly-watching events, with Nantou County’s Lu Gu starting earliest on April 5. Netizens eager to catch the beautiful sight of fireflies can start signing up for related activities and plan this rare firefly-watching journey.

The “2014 Qian Die Valley Firefly Season” in Shilin Neishanxi, Taipei City, is coming soon, with firefly species such as the yellow-edged glowworm and black-winged firefly expected to appear around the end of March.This year, Qian Die Valley will open for nighttime firefly viewing from April 18 to May 25, and registration for visits is now open. Weekends accept individual, walk-in, group, and family reservations, while weekdays are divided into B1 slots (available for groups of 5 or more) and B2 slots (requiring a reservation for 20 or more people), with pre-registration and advance payment required. The “2014 Tong Xue Firefly Dance Season” event at the Er Ge Shan Nature Center will run from April 12 to May 10, featuring three types of tours: a 2.5-hour Wednesday-exclusive session, a half-day Sunday-exclusive tour, and a full-day Saturday-exclusive tour. In addition to the highlight “Er Ge Firefly Avenue,” the program also includes activities such as getting to know Er Ge and a firefly exposé. The 2.5-hour Wednesday session is suitable for seniors and young families,while a Friday-exclusive session on April 18 and 25 is offered for photography enthusiasts,requiring self-organized groups of 20 to 40 people.
