Greece’s Sky City – Meteora: Gaze at Stunning Mountain Scenery & Visit UNESCO-listed Monasteries

Among the lands of the gods, the Sky City of Meteora stands out as the most majestic. In Greek, Meteora means “suspended in the air.” The monasteries of this Sky City are built atop towering rock formations. This natural geological wonder, combined with its miraculous architecture, makes stepping into Meteora feel like entering a fantastical world.

Entering the Thessaly region in northern Greece, you’ll find towering rock pillars rising before your eyes. Isolated medieval monasteries with red roofs and white walls stand firmly atop the rugged cliffs—so beautiful it takes your breath away.

For Christianity, if one wishes to symbolically approach God, believers might construct a Gothic church that reaches toward the heavens. Greek Orthodox Christians, however, honor God in a different way. Meteora, where the Pinios River has eroded the mountains over millions of years, has formed these giant rocks—a masterpiece of divine craftsmanship. Building monasteries atop them holds profound significance.

In the 11th century, hermits seeking solitude and a life of asceticism moved into natural caves on the cliffs. After scaling the cliffs with rudimentary ropes, they would pull them up to sever their only connection to the outside world—a symbol of their devotion to spiritual practice.

It wasn’t until the mid-14th century that the first monastery in Meteora was established. Due to the harsh terrain, construction was extremely difficult—every brick and tile had to be hoisted up using pulleys. It took the monks about 200 years to create the magnificent “Sky City” seen today, which at its peak included as many as 24 monasteries. Since the 16th century, some have been gradually abandoned, and now only six remain inhabited.

Meteora, the Sky City, was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988. Visiting the Great Meteoron Monastery, Varlaam Monastery, or St. Stephen’s Monastery allows you to experience this life of seclusion from the world.

Standing in the Sky City, far from the noise and bustle of the mundane world, you’ll find the most tranquil place within your heart. Overlooking the towns at the foot of the mountains and gazing at the majestic ranges ahead, you’ll enjoy the most expansive views—like ascending to a higher realm in life.
