Do your explorations of Taipei always revolve around cinemas, cafés, and department stores? The Taipei City Government’s Department of Information and Tourism recommends three family-friendly “BMW” travel routes, and suggests starting from the city’s tourism service centers. By utilizing convenient transportation options such as “Bus, Bike,” “Metro,” and walking (Walk), you can effortlessly experience Taipei’s diverse and vibrant urban charm.

According to surveys conducted by the Taipei City Tourism Service Center over the years on the travel purposes of visitors to Taipei, both domestic and international tourists enjoy coming to Taipei for flower viewing, night market food, night scenery, as well as visiting Maokong for the Maokong Gondola and tea tasting. Therefore, the Department of Information and Tourism has planned and recommended three travel routes: “Exploring ‘Cat’ Fun in Taipei,” “Waterfront Riverside Happy Cycling Trails,” and “Grass Mountain Eco Time Tunnel,” allowing everyone to go on outdoor outings during holidays and enjoy the leisurely pleasures of connecting with mountains and waters.
The Department of Information and Tourism especially recommends the “Exploring ‘Cat’ Fun in Taipei” route for families with young children. Start your day with a visit to the Taipei Zoo to see adorable giant panda cub “Yuan Zai,” the Formosan black bear, and other native animals. The zoo also features a lovely animal area where children can get up close with the animals. At the Zoo Station of the Maokong Gondola, you can even take the Hello Kitty Gondola to Maokong Station. Nearby, the Camphor Tree Trail has gentle slopes surrounded by tea plantations and terraced fields. Early April is the season for lupines, making it a perfect spot for a spring outing and sightseeing.

The “Waterfront Riverside Happy Cycling Trails” route is ideal for energetic travelers. Start by taking the Tamsui Line of the MRT to Yuanshan Station, where you can admire flowers at the Taipei Expo Park, then transfer to a bus to walk around Dajia Riverside Park, soaking in the fragrance of plants and trees. Afterward, you can take a ferry on the Blue Highway to tour the riverside scenery—be sure to check the tidal conditions with the shipping operator beforehand. And of course, no riverside park visit is complete without cycling. Taipei City and New Taipei City have launched an integrated rental service, allowing you to rent a bike in one city and return it in another, along with added road assistance services. Both cities’ riverside parks provide basic repair tools and first aid kits for public use free of charge.
Alternatively, you can start from Jiantan Station on the Tamsui Line of the MRT and head to Yangmingshan for a “Grass Mountain Eco Time Tunnel” journey. Enjoy the beauty of nature in Yangmingshan National Park, experience forest bathing, breathe in phytoncides, and visit Zhuzihu to admire the blooming sea anemones, even picking them yourself for a taste of farm life. Next, head to Lengshuikeng for scenic views, and the lush grasslands of Qingtian Gang are the top choice for a countryside outing, offering breathtaking views that are incredibly relaxing. Then, visit a featured landscape restaurant in Yangmingshan for a delicious meal, satisfying both body and soul.
