【Thursday Arts & Culture】Tainan Arts Festival Features 185 Performances Across the City

This year’s Tainan Arts Festival features its first ever musical production—an all-English epic musical titled “Return to Zeelandia,” entirely produced locally. Tainan Mayor Lai Qing-de said that just as Americans go wild for baseball and the NBA when the season comes around, people in Tainan go crazy for the arts. Everyone wants to catch various performances—that’s what makes Tainan special. That’s why the city government is offering top-tier performances to enrich the lives of citizens and add vibrancy to the city.

 

The Tainan City Government Cultural Affairs Bureau stated that “International Classics, Taiwanese Excellence, and Urban Stages” are the three main themes of this year’s “Tainan Arts Festival.” With literature as the connecting thread, it can be described as Taiwan’s “most local, most international, and most literary” arts festival. The “Festival Night” will take place on April 12 at 18:30 at South Taiwan Science Park’s Green Heart Plaza, with the “West Side Story Film Symphony Concert” kicking off the “International Classics” section of the 2014 Tainan Arts Festival in grand style.

 

In the “International Classics” section, there will be a series of outstanding international performances, including the acclaimed Japanese music maestro Joe Hisaishi collaborating with elite musicians from Europe and Asia in “Joe Hisaishi & the Vienna State Opera Choir”; the original cast of the hit movie “Les Choristes (The Chorus),” the French Saint-Marc Children's Choir; the British A Cappella group The King's Singers performing at Yizai Jincheng for their 40th anniversary celebration; the timeless classic “Jabba Tal-Kebir & the Kaohsiung Symphony Orchestra”; the family-friendly “The Magic Piano and Chopin Shorts”; TIPC Percussion Show and Renato Martins Trio as part of the TIPC World Rising Percussion Artists Series; and legendary dance master Mark Morris with “Mozart I & II,” “Bartók, Weber & Hummel.” Each performance promises to be spectacular.
