The hydrangeas at Zhuzihhu are in full bloom—now is the perfect time to admire them.

Zhuzihhu is world-renowned for its sea of calla lilies. During the annual Calla Lily Season, it attracts over 600,000 visitors eager to admire the blooms. After May, the supply of calla lilies dwindles, and the flowers in the fields are preparing to enter their summer dormancy period. They will then undergo root recovery, leaf growth, and flower bud differentiation throughout autumn and winter before bursting into bloom again in the following spring.

Currently, most farmers in Zhuzihhu still primarily grow calla lilies. However, aside from calla lilies, the area’s cool and humid climate, along with its slightly acidic soil, is also well-suited for cultivating camellias, hydrangeas, and azaleas. Azaleas are mainly sold as seedlings, while camellias are marketed as potted plants, seedlings, and sculpted landscape designs for garden scenery. Hydrangeas, being closer to the cut flower market, are mostly supplied as fresh-cut flowers. There are about 10-plus farmers growing hydrangeas in this region, covering approximately 5 hectares, with an annual cut flower yield of around 250,000 stems.

Recognizing that Zhuzihhu has become a key leisure destination, after mid-to-late May when the romantic white calla lilies begin to fade, they are followed by the vibrant purple-blue hues of hydrangeas. Around 7 to 8 varieties of hydrangeas are cultivated in Zhuzihhu, showcasing a rich diversity of colors including pure white, pink with red edges, light pink, magenta, light blue, and blue. Both large-flowered and medium-flowered varieties are distributed across the farms, creating splendidly layered colors that are perfect for tourist photos and are sure to leave you amazed. Cut hydrangeas typically last about a week in a vase. For best results after picking, soak the entire hydrangea in water for at least half an hour and wrap the blossoms with thoroughly damp newspaper to ensure they remain bright and vibrant after bringing them home.
