This early summer, the Bureau of Public Works’ Parks Division provides a place for you to slow down and appreciate the beauty of orchids — the New Orchid Pavilion in Shilin Official Residence Park. The Bureau will host the “Mixed Genera Orchid Exhibition” at the New Orchid Pavilion from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM daily from Thursday, May 29 (2014) to Sunday, June 15 (2014). The so-called mixed genera orchids refer to cultivated orchid species beyond the main five major genera in horticulture — Cattleya, Phalaenopsis, Dendrobium, Paphiopedilum, and Bulbophyllum. All other types of orchid varieties fall under the mixed genera category.

This exhibition showcases approximately over 50 varieties and more than 400 plants of mixed genera orchids. Noteworthy special varieties include: the Cymbidium with flowers that can grow up to 18–25 cm, fragrant and long-blooming — such as “Golden Tiger,” “Bumblebee,” and “Fragrant Empress”; the “Mouse Tail Orchid” with leaves evolved into stick-like forms over 1 meter long, resembling a long mouse tail, uniquely charming; the “Necktie Orchid” with leaf widths as thick as a tie; the brownish-yellow “Moth-shaped Oncidium” with flower shapes resembling a large moth with three antennae, and this exhibition has also specially collected its pale yellow and off-white variant; the petite and lovely “Rod-shaped Fingernail Orchid” with purple-and-white clustered blooms; and the vividly colored and variably hued “Vanda.”
