Gion Tsujiri, beloved by many for its Japanese sweets and mochi and a must-visit in Japan, has already had multiple counters in Taiwan. On July 4th, it officially opened its flagship store in Taipei! The term “wagashi” originates from “kashi,” which refers to fruits or seeds. Gion Tsujiri’s wagashi are born from this tradition. Surrounded by the natural beauty of the four seasons, Japan enjoys an abundance of sweet seasonal fruits. “Wagashi” is the perfect embodiment of the seasonal charm bestowed by nature and everyday Japanese life.

As of 2014, the eighth Gion Tsujiri branch in Taiwan, the “Sōke Gion Tsujiri Taipei Flagship Store,” has officially opened in Zhongshan District. This marks the 25th overseas branch of the Gion Tsujiri Group. The first overseas branch was established in Singapore in 1993, and to this day, it still upholds the consistent belief of “sending the ‘beauty’ and ‘heart’ of Japanese culture to the times and to the world.”

The flagship store mainly has three floors. The first-floor shop features large glass display cases, showcasing and selling a large quantity of authentic Japanese-imported wagashi, mochi, and desserts. Their exquisitely delicate appearance, coupled with uniquely aesthetic packaging, resembles an art exhibition space.

Heading up to the second floor, you’ll find a rather amusing banana-shaped seat, and the tasting and resting area facing the large window also uses wooden long tables to create an open yet relaxing dining space. Here, you can leisurely sip tea while tasting and selecting Taiwan-exclusive fruit custard steamed cakes. The soft and fluffy steamed cakes are filled with custard sauce made from Taiwan’s representative bananas and mangoes, with each bite releasing the enchanting aroma of the fruits.

The third floor is the first overseas production facility established, mainly producing Taiwan-exclusive goods. For this, Gion Tsujiri has assigned a professional master with 10 years of experience in making mochi and holding a Japanese national qualification as a Level 2 Mochi Manufacturing Skills Craftsman to be stationed here. Daily limited manual production includes 1,000 Taiwan-exclusive banana/mango custard steamed cakes each, demonstrating full sincerity to Taiwan and conveying the elegance and deliciousness of wagashi.
