Based in Mooloolaba on the Sunshine Coast, Sunreef Diving has introduced an Australian-first experience that allows visitors to swim with enchanting humpback whales. These enormous and gentle whales have long been beloved, and now people have the opportunity to admire them from a truly unique perspective.

Dan Hart, whale watch supervisor at Sunreef, expressed great enthusiasm for offering this amazing experience to tourists. “I’ve swum with humpback whales in Tonga before—it was an extraordinary experience, just a few metres away from these majestic creatures, locking eyes with them. It’s hard to put into words. This experience will give you that incredible connection with these animals, and we’re thrilled to offer it to every visitor.”
Dan Hart also noted that swimming with humpback whales is conducted under strict regulations to ensure the safety of both participants and the whales. Each trip lasts approximately three hours round trip, with a maximum of 20 participants per session. Sunreef provides safety briefings to all guests and supplies wetsuits and snorkelling gear. Once whales are spotted, the boat will stay 100 metres away. If it's deemed safe, the engines will be turned off, and guests may then enter the water while holding onto a flotation line attached to the vessel.

The whale swimming activities take place in the heart of Queensland’s Sunshine Coast—Mooloolaba. It takes just 10 minutes from the Sunreef dock to reach these pristine waters. During the winter whale migration months, the water conditions here are ideal, with sea temperatures ranging between 17 and 23 degrees Celsius and visibility extending up to 30 metres.
