Stroll through the Natural Forests of Songluo Trail in Yilan

Originally an ancient hunting trail used by the local Atayal tribe, it was later restored and reopened by the Forestry Bureau. Along the Songluo Trail, there are no particularly prominent signs, so most tourists don’t usually notice this path. However, this also means less human disturbance, preserving the tranquility that allows hikers to enjoy a moment of serene solitude.

The warm and humid climate here has created a primitive forest landscape reminiscent of a tropical rainforest, boasting exceptionally rich natural ecology. For example, the clear Songluo Stream was once home to the endemic Formosan landlocked salmon, commonly known as “bitter fish” and referred to as “Tilina” by the Atayal indigenous people. It was once distributed across mountain streams throughout Taiwan, typically inhabiting waters at elevations of 300 to over 1,000 meters, feeding mainly on diatoms, mayfly larvae, or caddisflies. Its population drastically declined due to overfishing, but thanks to the conservation efforts of local residents, it has gradually been successfully restored.

Walking along the pristine Songluo Trail, you’ll encounter no steep terrain along the way. There are rest pavilions set up along the path, surrounded by lush tropical broadleaf forests. The sounds of insects, birds, and the gentle babbling of the clear Songluo Stream easily make you forget the noise and worries of everyday life. Visiting the Songluo Trail to immerse yourself in the charm of nature is truly a rewarding experience.

Songluo National Trail
By Car
Drive along Highway No. 7 in Yilan past Yulan, and you will reach Songluo Village. The entrance to the Songluo National Trail is right at the Songluo Bridgehead.
Public Transport
- Take the Ubus bus from Luodong to Lishan. After passing Yingshi Bridge, get off at Yingshi Village and then arrive at the Songluo National Trail.
- Take the Ubus bus from Yilan to Duli Mountain or Nanshan Village; alternatively, take a bus to Lishan or to Baling, and get off at Songluo Village to reach the Songluo National Trail.
