With the arrival of the Start of Autumn solar term, an orange-yellow feast of golden needle flower seas is about to unfold. The Hualien County Government invites everyone across the country to come to Hualien and enjoy a "Love You Forever • Needles of Happiness" journey. In recent years, the Hualien County Government has allocated funds to actively promote the golden needle flower retention policy. In addition to offering the public a visual feast by admiring the magnificent alpine golden needle flower seas, it also aims to boost the county’s tourism industry and increase local agricultural economic output. The year 2014 symbolizes “love,” and this year’s golden needle flower season starting on August 8th holds deep meaning — mainly using the “Mother Herb – Daylily (Golden Needle Flower)” to express respect and love for all fathers: “Love You Forever, Dad.”

From August 8 to September 22, 2014, two major alpine golden needle producing areas in Hualien — Chike Mountain in Yuli Township and Liushitou Mountain in Fuli Township — will host a 46-day golden needle flower sea season covering approximately 70 hectares. Based on past experience, the peak blooming period is expected to occur in mid to late August, but this still depends on rainfall conditions for the year.
Fuli Township’s Liushitou Mountain
Situated on the Coastal Mountain Range of the Huatung Valley, Fuli Township’s Liushitou Mountain sits at an altitude of about 960 meters. Golden needle flowers bloom amid lush green mountain mist, interwoven with the majestic valley mountains to form a colorful summer golden ocean wave. Looking out, the blooming golden needle flowers roll like waves from distant hills to nearby slopes, perfectly embodying the saying “quantity creates beauty.” And if you’re lucky, you might even catch a glimpse of the spectacular sea of clouds surging over the Huatung Valley.

Transportation
1. Liushitou Mountain access hours: From August 8 to September 22, 2014, daily from 7:30 AM to 5:00 PM.
2. To maintain smooth traffic, only passenger vehicles with nine seats (inclusive) or fewer are allowed up the mountain. However, Class A and B passenger vehicles are completely prohibited on mountain roads, and one-way traffic control is enforced. Vehicles may ascend via Provincial Highway 9, 308.5 km mark (Zhudian Village), and descend from the “Starting Point of the Wanling to Fuxing Tribe Access Road (0 km)” on Liushitou Mountain toward Amei Creek (Dongli Village).
Yuli Township’s Chike Mountain
Yuli Township’s Chike Mountain, with an altitude of about 800–1,200 meters, is located at the mountaintop of Chike Mountain Peak in Gaoliao Community, Yuli Township. The mountain area was originally covered with evergreen broadleaf Chike trees, hence its name. After nearly half a century of golden needle cultivation, the golden needle flower sea has become the most famous landscape of Chike Mountain. In addition, there is a giant rock on the mountain that resembles a turtle, locally called the “Thousand-Ton Stone Turtle.” Standing atop the turtle, you can not only be surrounded by the flower sea but also gaze out at the Huatung Valley and Central Mountain Range.
