The Darvaza Oasis (also known as Derweze) is located in the Karakum Desert, where daytime temperatures can soar up to 55°C, yet may plummet to -33°C at night. Amid this vast wilderness lies a massive crater that emits a mysterious orange glow, shining brightly across the desolate expanse and creating an eerie, otherworldly atmosphere. The site has earned the striking nickname “the Door to Hell.”

The “Door to Hell” is said to have been formed in 1971, when Turkmenistan was still part of the Soviet Union and not yet independent. Soviet geologists came here to explore natural energy resources. After a drilling operation caused a collapse, this massive crater was left behind.

The collapse caused continuous leakage of natural gas and toxic gases from within, and the geologists had no choice but to ignite the gas to prevent the spread of harmful emissions. They originally hoped the fire would die out within days, but unexpectedly, it has kept burning for over forty years. What began as a “beautiful mistake” has now become a one-of-a-kind global wonder—a breathtaking and mysterious sight that fascinates all who see it and has become the region’s most famous attraction.
