The limited-view Wave Canyon with its stunning rock waves is incredibly unique!

Hidden within the Coyote Buttes region at the border of southern Utah and Arizona in the United States lies the astonishing natural wonder known as The Wave. This surreal landscape was formed from massive sand dunes deposited during the Jurassic period 190 million years ago, covered and stacked in layers with red sand soaked in groundwater, which over millennia calcified into sandstone.

The abundant and varied iron oxides in the sandstone give it dazzling colors. Water flow and wind-blown sand, like nature’s artists, have alternately sculpted The Wave, resulting in this eye-catching 3D landscape with vividly colored flowing patterns. The undulating rock waves are truly a sight to behold.

The U.S. Bureau of Land Management limits daily visitors to The Wave to just 20 in order to preserve this natural wonder. Each entry permit costs $5, and applications can be made either online or by queuing on-site. For online applications, you must apply by 12:00 PM on the 1st of each month to reserve a permit up to four months in advance, with only 10 spots available per day. On-site permits are issued daily at 9:00 AM at the management office. Applicants must submit a completed form in advance, and the final 10 lucky spots are decided by lottery.
