A photographer has released a series of photos capturing the blue fluorescence in Australia’s Gippsland Lakes. The serene waters of the Gippsland Lakes appear as if they’ve been poured with fluorescent dye, emitting an eerie, magical blue glow in the darkness.

The photographer, Hart, and his friends who visited the Gippsland Lakes at the time threw stones into the water, deliberately disturbing it to create bursts of blue fluorescence on the surface. As they entered the lake, their wet bodies were coated with a layer of glowing blue paint, creating an effect that was both eerie and fascinating. The romantic blue glow of the Gippsland Lakes shares the same cause as Taiwan’s Matsu Islands’ "Blue Tears" phenomenon, which occurs from April to June — both are caused by bioluminescent chemical reactions triggered when the water-dwelling microorganisms known as dinoflagellates are disturbed. Generally, the light emitted by these microorganisms is not very bright and goes unnoticed by passersby, but the density of dinoflagellates in the Gippsland Lakes is extremely high, resulting in this unique spectacle.

Scholars believe the “abundance” of the lake’s microorganisms is due to floods and wildfires that washed rich nutrients into the water, promoting the massive proliferation of algae.

The Gippsland Lakes are located in Victoria, Australia. The lake is formed by five rivers, and the nearby Ninety Mile Beach not only boasts long stretches of pristine white sand but also a rich ecological environment and a variety of water activities. Its stunning scenery often attracts many tourists, making it a very famous tourist destination in Australia.
