Dance with Butterflies – Fall Butterfly Watching at Dagou Stream

Autumn is the most reassuring season for butterflies and also the last chance of the year to admire their mass flight. All species of Danaid butterflies found in Taipei can be spotted along Dagou Stream in Neihu. The Taipei City Government’s Department of Urban Development is offering a free ecological tour of Dagou Stream on October 18 (Saturday), inviting citizens to dance with the butterflies during the cozy autumn weekend afternoon and explore the stream’s ecosystem alongside expert guides.

Just as migratory birds travel long distances every year, butterflies also migrate. Taiwan’s “Common Crow Butterfly,” though common across low to mid-altitude mountain areas, is originally a tropical species that cannot tolerate cold weather. This drives them to migrate and gather in the Purple Butterfly Valley during winter to escape the chilly northeastern monsoon. Taiwan’s Purple Butterfly Valley and Mexico’s Monarch Butterfly Valley are known globally as the two largest overwintering butterfly valleys. Therefore, the Common Crow Butterfly holds special and representative significance for Taiwan. With its clear waters and clusters of nectar-rich plants along its banks, Dagou Stream in Taipei attracts numerous butterfly species when flowers bloom, making it easy to spot flocks of “Common Crow Butterflies.” It is one of the easiest places in Taipei to observe various butterflies feeding on nectar.

Dagou Stream is a naturally-formed waterway featuring rare geological landscapes. Its upper reaches boast well-preserved multi-layered forests, maintaining a diverse and pristine ecological environment. Considering that the lower part of the stream connects to large residential communities, the area not only ensures safe flood discharge and ecological restoration but also provides recreational and water-friendly spaces for nearby residents. The design emphasizes both ecological landscape and leisure functions. This year, the area has been further developed into an educational waterfront space that highlights the geological and ecological features around Dagou Stream, offering city dwellers a fun and educational place to connect with nature.

The complete riverside trail along Dagou Stream, along with various eco-stone structures and diverse aquatic facilities, provides a rich habitat. Butterflies, dragonflies, and frogs are commonly seen here. The stream is also home to the endemic Taiwanese Zacco barbatulus, as well as kingfishers that frequent the streambanks. Known for their excellent fishing skills, they are nicknamed “fishing birds” or “kingfisher anglers.” Their backs feature striking metallic blue feathers that are exceptionally eye-catching.
