The Century-Old House "Backpackers' Inn" in Dadaocheng: Chill with Coffee & Embark on a Cultural Adventure

To explore Taipei’s cultural history and the passage of time, the old streets of Dadaocheng are absolutely the perfect place. Two young locals passionate about historic buildings and travel rented a century-old house tucked away in the bustling district, transforming it into a café, backpackers’ inn, and artsy space. The long-sealed memories of this old house are about to be revived.

The unassuming, narrow doorway is easy to miss, but the shop is aptly and simply named “The Stairs Are Steep.” The entrance leads directly to a long, narrow staircase, and the owner joked that the stairs help connect them with guests ascending them—thus the name was born. This century-old building had been vacant for six or seven years, but after renovation, time here seems to have started playing again.

Unlike typical old-house renovations, The Stairs Are Steep preserves the original interior structure of a Taipei home from the 1940s–50s intact. With its maze-like layout, hidden staircases, and corridors, it feels like embarking on an exploration of an old house. Guests can freely choose their favorite nook—sit by the window to watch the bustling street, chat with friends in an indoor booth, or listen to the whispers of the banyan tree on the small rooftop terrace on the third floor. It can be an inn, a café, or even a workspace. The completely open space allows travelers to be themselves.

The shop offers accommodation and meals. Though the menu isn’t extensive, all dishes are made with healthy, delicious ingredients. The owners insist on using natural ingredients, replacing sugar with honey. Signature dishes include pan-fried dumplings and apple walnut salad, ensuring guests enjoy tasty yet guilt-free meals. The old landlord’s father was a carpenter, and the handmade wooden features throughout the space showcase the traditional craftsmanship of the master, creating an emotional connection. It preserves Taipei’s past memories of everyday life and lets backpackers experience the charm of old-school living.
