“Sexuality” is an innate instinct. In the conservative social climates of the past, people wore masks of morality and ethics to avoid discussing it. But as times have progressed, attitudes toward sex have become more open and respectful. Many countries have adopted a healthier approach to “sex,” using museums to expose or educate people, allowing sex to return to its most primal simplicity.

Amsterdam, Netherlands — Sex Museum (Venustempel)and Red Light Secrets
The unassuming façade of the Sex Museum often causes people to walk right past without realizing the wonders inside. Though small in size, the museum’s all-inclusive exhibits are one of its biggest selling points. From erotic paintings on scrolls, books, and porcelain, to sex dolls made from clay, bronze, ivory, and marble, it vividly showcases humanity’s most primal desires.

The newly opened Red Light Secrets museum allows visitors to glimpse into the daily lives of sex workers, as well as the professional services provided by sex workers after the legalization of sex trade post-2000.

Moscow — Sex Museum (Tochka G)
Tochka G features many provocative works, including pieces by artist Vera Donskaya-Khilko such as a nude duel between Putin and Obama. Other exhibits include Soviet-era condoms and Russia’s largest sex shop.

Iceland — Phallological Museum
The Phallological Museum in Reykjavik, Iceland, was founded in 1977 by historian Sigurður Hjartarson. It houses a collection of penises from various animals and is currently managed by his son, Hjörtur. The museum now has a total of 283 penises, including one human specimen and the 70-kilogram, 170-centimeter penis of a sperm whale. Hjörtur says, “This museum educates through penises because mammal anatomy used to be a taboo subject.”
