Comparable to Pingxi and Jinguashi！A new attraction in the old mining pit of Xinyi District, Taipei City

Who would have thought that within the bustling Xinyi District of Taipei, there’s also a beautiful mining pit full of historical charm like Jinguashi? The abandoned old mining pit “Hexing Coal Mine,” hidden beside Beitai Cihui Temple in northern Taipei, has been revitalized after being redesigned by the Taipei City Government, becoming a new and distinctive attraction in Taipei City. In the future, those wanting an intellectual adventure into the world of mining pits no longer need to travel all the way to the Jinguashi mining area — just hop on a U-bike and you’re there with ease！

The “Hexing Coal Mine” mining area is located beside the old Pih River in northern Taipei. In the early days, coal mining activities led to large piles of coal slag deposited around the area, resulting in relatively fragile geological conditions. After redevelopment by the Department of Urban Development, the site was integrated with the surrounding old mining area along the old Pih River to create an overall environmental renewal project that blends local natural landscapes with the cultural characteristics of mining pits. It now offers citizens a new leisure and recreational destination. Upon entering the park, visitors can walk along the brick-red flooring and follow the imagery of mining cart tracks into a “time tunnel.” Along the way, they can admire realistic depictions of mining carts emerging from the pit, as well as ceramic murals titled “The Life of Coal” that illustrate the journey of coal from formation to becoming a finished product. At the end of the path stands a “spiral staircase.” With luck, you might even spot many bats hanging upside down at the mine’s slag discharge outlet, resting.
