The Japanese government is stepping up efforts to install free Wi-Fi. Starting December 3, anyone visiting Kyoto can use wireless base stations to access the internet for free at bus stops, subway stations, 7-Eleven convenience stores, and public facilities. The city has set up over 650 hotspots, with plans to add another 760 in popular tourist areas by 2015, bringing the total to over 1,400 hotspots. Currently, there are two types of free Wi-Fi hotspots: “KYOTO WiFi” and “KYOTO_WiFi02”. The former allows immediate connection upon access, while the latter requires obtaining a password first. Guests can either scan a QR code or send an email to guest@inf-kyoto-city.info to receive a visitor password.
