New way to explore Pier-2 Art Center in Kaohsiung — ride the small steam train around the park!

Pier-2 Art Center in Kaohsiung has a new attraction to offer. The Kaohsiung Museum of History has handcrafted a 1:8.4 scale replica of a steam-powered train at Station 8-2/5 in the B8 warehouse of the Penglai area within Pier-2 Art Center, launching a roughly 1-kilometer-long "Hamasen Pier-2 Mini Steam Train Ride Activity," allowing both children and adults to hop on the train and enjoy a fun day in the park!

In order to help the public learn more about the century-old railway history of Hamasen, the Kaohsiung City Bureau of Cultural Affairs created a 1:8.4 scale replica of the steam locomotive DT650. At the Penglai B8 warehouse, formerly a Taiwan Sugar warehouse, they built the country’s first 5-inch-gauge railway, allowing visitors to sit aboard and experience a steam train journey in the Pier-2 Art Zone. Additionally, while waiting at Station 8-2/5, visitors can listen to stories of Hamasen’s century-old railway and admire restored exhibits such as the Tengyun locomotive, learning about the history of rail transport.

Other than the steam train, visitors to Pier-2 can also experience a restored mini electric tram to understand the transition from pre- to post-electrification of railways. Park officials noted that due to maintenance needs, only the mini electric tram is available on weekdays, while the steam train joins the schedule on weekends and holidays, with each ride lasting about 10 minutes.
