The Hokuriku Shinkansen has opened!
A major transportation event in Japan in 2015 — the Hokuriku Shinkansen began operations on March 14. In addition to shortening the travel time from the Tokyo metropolitan area to the Hokuriku region, it now takes just two hours and 28 minutes to get from Tokyo to Kanazawa, enabling more people to extend their travel plans to Kanazawa and Toyama, and reigniting the tourism boom in Ishikawa, Toyama, and Fukui prefectures!

Trial rides of the Hokuriku Shinkansen were held over the two days of February 7 and 8, 2015, receiving 85,407 applications (total participants: 216,319 people). In the end, 2,800 lucky individuals got the chance to ride the new W7 series train, which features large windows perfect for enjoying the scenery along the way, making the ride even more enjoyable.

With the opening of the Hokuriku Shinkansen, tourism development in the Hokuriku region is expected to flourish further. While most foreign visitors to Japan primarily go to Tokyo or major Kansai cities such as Osaka and Kyoto, the Hokuriku Shinkansen makes it easy to access off-the-beaten-path attractions like the ancient city of Kanazawa, the Shirakawa-go Gassho Village in Toyama, and the Fukui hot spring area. For travelers eager to explore the beauty of the Hokuriku region, arranging transportation for their itineraries will be much more convenient.

Travelers can also make good use of the Japan Rail Pass for JR Shinkansen trains. This multi-day unlimited ride pass not only offers faster and more convenient transportation but is also quite cost-effective. From March 14 to April 23, 2015, those who purchase tickets for the Hokuriku Shinkansen and Joetsu Shinkansen via "ekinét" or "Mobile Suica" may also have the chance to receive special products from the Hokuriku-Shinetsu region.
