Bottled beer specially crafted for 35,000 feet altitude — Cathay Pacific’s Betsy Beer, a flight-exclusive edition!

Many people enjoy having a drink to relax during flights, but the high-altitude environment and air pressure can inevitably affect their taste experience. To address this, Cathay Pacific has collaborated with Hong Kong Beer to develop the first-ever bottled beer created specifically for flying — Betsy Beer — allowing passengers to enjoy craft beer at 35,000 feet.

Taking into account how high-altitude environments and cabin air pressure affect passengers’ taste sensitivity during flights, Cathay Pacific and Hong Kong Beer have joined forces. Using a blend of science and traditional brewing techniques, and selecting authentic ingredients from Hong Kong and the UK, they have specially crafted Betsy Beer. The aroma of the ingredients and the carbonation effect stimulate the taste buds, delivering a layered flavor that remains enjoyable both at high altitudes and on the ground, satisfying passengers’ taste buds.

The beer incorporates a unique longan flavor, where the sweet and fruity taste of longan adds roundness and richness. During the brewing process, a suitable amount of authentic honey produced in Hong Kong’s New Territories is also blended in, giving the beer a subtle and pleasant floral note that enhances the taste. Additionally, traditional Fuggles hops — a classic ingredient in British craft beer — enrich the beer’s flavor profile with more complexity.

Cathay Pacific has named its new brand of beer after its first DC-3 aircraft, “Betsy,” which entered service in the 1940s and 1950s and operated regional routes.Betsy Beer will be available exclusively in First and Business Class cabins on select routes between Hong Kong and the UK (including London Heathrow, London Gatwick, and Manchester airports) from March 1 to April 30, 2017.
