Daily life of underwater residents at Mexico’s Underwater Sculpture Museum

Located on the Caribbean coast near Cancun, a famous resort destination in northern Mexico, there is an underwater sculpture museum — the Cancun Underwater Museum — which is the world’s largest underwater sculpture museum. Designed and built by British artist Jason deCaires Taylor, it displays a total of 460 sculptures. Each figure is incredibly lifelike, resembling still residents beneath the sea.

The Cancun Underwater Museum took 18 months from start to completion and showcases 460 sculptures created by Taylor across different periods. The hyper-realistic human figures in the sea appear as if they are underwater residents frozen in motion, also known as “silent art.” All the sculptures were made using pH-balanced eco-concrete, on which colorful corals grow. New life attaches to the pale human forms, each posture graceful and unique, complementing the deep blue ocean. Schools of fish swim among them in dreamlike fashion, creating a stunning sight.
