A new way to explore Taiwan: Double-decker buses hit the roads in northern, central, and southern Taiwan

To promote tourism development, the Directorate General of Highways has subsidized Taipei City, Taichung City, and Kaohsiung City to introduce 21 double-decker buses. These will connect major attractions along sightseeing routes, with plans to launch before the end of the year, offering travelers a new transportation option for exploring Taiwan. The 21 double-decker buses will primarily operate on sightseeing routes and are not allowed on highways or expressways—only urban roads. Additionally, standing passengers will not be permitted on the upper deck; all passengers must remain seated, wear seatbelts, and are not allowed to move around freely.

● Taipei City

It is planned to introduce eight sightseeing double-decker buses, with the route planning already completed. The total route length is nearly 30 kilometers, starting from Taipei 101 and passing by landmarks such as the National Father Memorial Hall, Da’an Forest Park, Xiaonanmen, Ximending, the Museum of Fine Arts, the Shilin Official Residence, and the National Palace Museum. Taipei’s sightseeing buses will feature a distinctive identification system and colorful exterior designs, with clear signage at each stop and transfer information. Currently, the plan is to have a bus every 15 to 20 minutes, with fares set at the same level as regular city buses. The onboard announcements will be in multiple languages, including Chinese, English, Japanese, and Korean. When announcing stops, drivers will also introduce nearby attractions.

● Taichung City

Plans include introducing one double-decker bus, with the route starting from Taichung Railway Station and passing by sightseeing spots such as the National Museum of Natural Science and the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts.
