As spring transitions into summer, April and May are the prime months for firefly viewing. The mountainous areas around Taichung offer excellent natural settings, with many locations—including Dongshi’s Ruanpi Pit, Dongshi Forest, Beitun’s Daking Zhongzheng Camping Area, Xinshe Lavender Forest, and Chouteng Pit Leisure Agriculture Area—offering firefly-watching activities. These are perfect for outings with friends or family.

● Dongshi
During the firefly season from April to May, Dongshi’s Ruanpi Pit Leisure Agriculture Area offers small packaged tour packages that include dinner, firefly viewing, and eco-guided tours. Dongshi Forest has seen over 80,000 fireflies appear so far, with the highest numbers expected around mid to late April. To coincide with the firefly season, Dongshi Forest has introduced a “Starlight Ticket,” offering discounted admission after 3 PM on weekdays until April 30, while full-price tickets remain in effect for daytime and holiday visits.

● Dakeng
The Taichung City Scenic Area Administration, in collaboration with the Taiwan Purple Crow Butterfly Conservation Association, is hosting firefly ecology guided tours every Saturday from April 18, April 25, and May 2 between 4 PM and 9 PM at the “Butterfly and Firefly Conservation Area” in Dakeng. Activities include an introduction to firefly knowledge, the release of firefly larvae, visits to firefly habitats, and evening open-air lectures on firefly ecology.
